Clijsters Qualifies for an Invitation to the Showdown with US Open Title
September 14, 2009 -- With Kim Clijsters completing her magical wild card run at the US Open title last night, she joins Serena Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova as qualifiers to be invited to the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup at Madison Square Garden. In it's innaugural year, the BNP Paribas Showdown brought together 2008 Grand Slam Champions Venus Williams, Serena Williams, and Ana Ivanovic as well as world no. 1 Jelena Jankovic, who was a wild card for an injured Maria Sharapova.
If the end of the women's 2009 Grand Slam calendar year is any indication of how exciting the 2010 Showdown will be, the Garden and New York tennis fans are in for quite a show. The women's US Open 'fortnight' saw an overwhelming number of dramatic matches and upsets on Arthur Ashe Stadium over the last two weeks. A tale of two cities of sorts, the Open has seen the emergence of new faces and the return of familiar faces. From Wozniacki, Wickmayer, Oudin to Clijsters and Serena Williams fans out at the grounds of Flushing Meadows have been particularly entertained watching the women's event in '09.
Wild card Kim Clijsters crowned US Open champion and in turn qualifies for the BNP Paribas Showdown
Once again, the BNP Paribas Showdown will invite the Grand Slam winners from the previous year to compete for the Billie Jean King Cup. With Serena Williams winning both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, a wild card participant will be invited for the fourth and final spot.
A wild card has not yet been invited, but anticipate the spot to be filled by a player that has won a Grand Slam title or has held the world number one ranking...
